Is Paper Piercing Complicated - Or Can I Do It?

By Lisa Sutherland

While paper piercing may sound complicated it isn't and in fact is one of the most enjoying scrapbooking techniques. This manner of scrapbooking allows the individual to create a layered look for their frames, backgrounds, or other decorations on the page. It gives depth to the piece and can create a wonderfully designed piece almost immediately. This technique is another way to establish a well rounded color scheme as well as dress up the book without a ton of work.

In order to create a paper piercing object the scrapper must first find a pattern. This pattern can then be cut apart and traced onto the wrong side of card stock paper or another heavier material. Once the pattern is traced make sure that the lines are straight to create a smooth edge when cutting the pattern out. Smooth edges are very important because any nick or bump in the edge can take away from the look or dimensional touch of the piece. Using a straight edge or other cutting tool can help achieve this without much trouble. This saves time and also creates a professional looking scrapbook.

When putting the pattern back together the scrapper can experiment and place it so that the object looks layered. Embellishing with other materials such as buttons, fabric, border and others will help build a wonderful look. Anything that is raised gives the 'up off' the paper impression, which is a very popular technique. When using the paper piercing technique it is a good idea to use acid free glue to piece the pattern together. This helps keep the object and color from bleeding as well as preserves the piece. Best of all use paper piercing to get creative and have a great time scrapbooking!
